Sprucing Up The Living Room
Our living room has transformed in the three years we have lived in our home. When we first moved in, we had nothing in the entryway and living room except an entryway rug and our two cabinets from IKEA. It looked rather pathetic, as we were trying to be “grown-ups” who actually have a house and a child. So we thought it would be a really good idea to put a playroom right in the front of the house. The space wasn’t carpeted and it was the first thing you see when you walk in the door, but who cares.
Well, when we realized the living area was a silly place for a play room, and that our carpeted sun room would make the perfect play space, we ended up switching the furniture from the two rooms. It was one of those “a-ha” moments where you realize, why didn’t we do this in the first place?
The living room now had a recliner chair and a leather couch. We had one end table and that was it. But, it started to feel like a real “grown-up” house. There was still a lot of work that had to be done in sprucing up our living room and our entryway.
We started to slowly add more to the space by creating an entryway bench and hanging a shelf above the bench. I found an entryway table and added some personality to the space to create a welcoming and inviting entryway. But the living room still needed some personal touches. Our brown, leather couch from a local store, along with the recliner chair we found at Costco, was enough seating for us in that space initially. We ended up finding a rug from Home Depot which fit the space perfectly.
Then I found the perfect ottoman/coffee table from Home Goods. The grey color and pattern totally fit the color-scheme of the space. It was the perfect size and was totally padded, which was exactly what I was looking for. With two young kids, I didn’t want anything that they could hurt themselves on, so I was looking for something that could serve as both a coffee table and an ottoman. By using this tray from Target, I think it totally makes the space feel more “home-y”.
After arranging and rearranging the space, I decided I was over the recliner chair in the living room. I wanted something a little more decorative that also worked with adding more seating to the room. The recliner was fine for when it was just our family hanging out in the living room, but when we had guests, we needed a few more seats and the recliner was just taking up too much room.
So after the garage sale this summer, I used the money I made to buy two Hudson Swoop accent chairs from Target. I added some purple pillows to add a pop of color to the chairs. Then I grabbed a white end table that was hiding in one of the kids bedroom closets to put in between the two accent chairs. Since I love living things in each room of the house, I added a plant (that the kids love to water) on the table.
Now I think it is difficult to find pillows that I really like, especially when I want them to be unique and different. I was so happy when I found Castaway Cove Decor and her amazing pillow covers. I purchased three in gray, navy, and purple for our living room couch. They work perfectly with my Pottery Barn pillow and my ruffle pillow from Target. I pulled out this blanket I purchased at Home Goods for when we want to snuggle up and read books or sit by the fire.
I ended up not doing anything to the shelving in our living room because I took some time over the summer to style the shelves. I ended up shopping the house for things to put on the shelves, along with use books to decorate because I just love having the kids see us read. I want them to enjoy reading and think of it as a relaxing and enjoyable experience, so I want to display our books to show them that we enjoy reading as well.
Our television is on our mantel, so I don’t really decorate that space. I have some flowers and candles that I put around the television, but other than that, I don’t really spend too much type decorating that space. One day, I would love to have a decorated mantel, but until then, I am happy not having to worry about decorating that space too!
My goal for any space I decorate and organize is to make it warm and inviting. We are not a formal family, so we don’t have formal areas in the house. I enjoy using every room and decorating that space in a way that makes guests and ourselves comfortable and able to relax, because isn’t that what a home is for?
