It is time to start packing up those gardening tools and swapping them out for the snow plows and shovels. But when you are packing up your garage from all the summer fun, think about creating effective garden tool storage. This will make it easy for you to unpack once the seasons change. Plus, you will know that everything has an official “home” in your garage!

How To Effectively Create Garden Tool Storage With Lowe’s

Edit

Step one for any project is to edit what you have to only what you need. For our garage, I had my husband look at all the yard tools. He did just get a new hedge trimmer, so we are able to sell the old one. That means it is one less tool to have to deal with.

We still have 3 different blowers because they all serve a different purpose. I am not one to say you don’t need all the things…but I want to make sure that we use the things that are being stored in the garage.

By editing to what you want to keep, it will make creating a plan that much easier!

Plan

Step two is to create a plan. I am such a visual person, that I need to see what goes where. We cleared everything out of the garage. Then I started to lay things down in the area I felt made the most sense for them to be stored. For our yard tools, I laid them on the ground based on where I wanted them to hang.

By grouping all the items together, I was able to visually see what we needed in terms of storage space. Some things, such as the old kitchen cabinets were going to stay as they were decent storage. But other things, like random hooks in the ceiling that kept bumping into the car, could go.

We moved all the awkward hooks so there was a clear space. I decided I wanted a system in our garage that could grow with our family. I suggest this for most garage projects I do. It is always smart to plan for the future, while making sure it works for your needs now.

Install

Based on my plan I created just by lying all the gardening tools around the floor of the garage, we made a Lowe’s run. I made sure to measure before I went.

I have used the Gladiator GearWall system in a few client’s garages, so I decided to stick with something I know is built well. Plus I know how to install it!

Depending on what your garage walls are like (ours are cinder block), follow the instructions for hanging the paneling onto the wall. Make sure you level everything too!

We went with a wall of the Gladiator GearWall System and then two long panels of the storage rail to hold all our gardening tools, along with hooks for everything. We also purchased the Gladiator Gearbox Freestanding Garage Cabinet to hold things like the oils and wires that go with all the gardening tools.

Hanging

Once all the panels were up, I added hooks to hang the lawn tools on the two single panels. In order to ensure that all the lawn equipment would fit, we used the hooks to make sure the height was just right. Our garage is not very tall, so we want to utilize as much wall space as we can.

Depending on the size of the lawn equipment, we used a variety of hooks. We used the Gladiator twin hook for the larger leaf blower. The hedge trimmer is hanging on the tool hook. And the rest of the lawn tools are hanging on single hooks.

Shelving

For the panel wall we created, I wanted to keep my gardening items stored. Because I edited them down to what I needed and grouped them together before I went shopping, I was able to get 3 Gladiator shelves to add to the GearWall. These shelves are to hold my planters, watering heads, and plant powders.

I also got a basket to hold our gardening gloves and gardening scissors for effective garden tool storage. Using the single hooks, I hung my gardening shovel and watering cans. I will be storing extra soil under the paneled wall, along with my boots.

Pegboards

We also have pegboards that were already installed in our garage. To make the space more usable for our garden tool storage, we kept brooms and shovels hanging on the pegboard with hooks. I added some labels to each hook so we know exactly what goes where…and if a kiddo “borrowed” a tool from the board.

On the other pegboard, I created a station for our dog using pegboard baskets. We also hung some of the saws up high so the kids couldn’t reach them.

Floor

Finally, my goal for this entire project was to keep as much off the floor as I possibly could. In order to make that happen, we purchased the Gladiator Gearbox Freestanding Garage Cabinet . Inside the drawer, I used a drawer organizer to hold all the sprays and oils that go with the lawn and gardening equipment. This makes it easy to find but keeps the drawer clean if something spills.

On the bottom shelf, I stored the attachments for the lawn equipment. The middle shelf is for garage items we need to install.

Now our garden tool storage is complete and I am beyond impressed with how it turned out! Plus it was rather easy to complete over a weekend!!

We spend a few hours grouping and editing down our gardening tools. After a trip to Lowe’s, we spend about 4 hours installing and attaching all the Gladiator shelving along with putting together the garage cabinet. We swept out the garage so the space will be clean and “leaf free” for the next few months. So this project can easily be done over a weekend!!
