Kids love order. They love structure. So let’s teach them how to organize with these three tips to support them get organized.

Set routines to get kids organized

We’ve talked about setting routines and how important that is, especially starting this time of the year. Establish those routines! Figure out what you want to do, how you want to do it, and then write it down. This is the first step to get kids organized.

The kids needed structure (like all kids do), so we just decided to start. This entire summer, I don’t think we ever got dressed until 10:30. We were having lazy mornings, eating brunch instead of breakfast or lunch. It was great while it lasted, but we needed to change that. It was time to get up and moving on time. I need a structure, so we started establishing a new routine.

So on Sunday, I created our morning routine–my routine and the kids routine. How are we going to get things set up in the morning so that we can have a productive day? Because changing routines takes time, I wanted to make sure that we wrote it all down with times so that we would remember. It seems rigid, but it helps get everyone (especially me) to get moving in the morning. 

Make checklists and to-do lists

Obviously, I’m a huge fan of checklists and to-do lists–for kids, adults, clients, anyone. That’s why I have so many checklists as freebies. They’re not one-size-fits-all, but something of this nature will help everyone.

For example, my daughter loves to-do lists and checklists, but if it’s more than five items long, she gets overwhelmed. I know I feel the same way sometimes! So for her, we just write down 5 things she has to do. Often, those five things lead up to one bigger task, like putting away her clothes.

Her to-do list for putting away her clothes could be: put away your t-shirts, put away your shorts, put away your socks… and so on. We break things down smaller so that it’s less overwhelming, and we focus on one big task or project at a time. So I want you to really think about how long your kids’ to-do lists are, your kiddos, and what each one of them needs. What should it look like for them?

Have them watch videos of other kids organizing

Do your kids like watching videos of other kids playing? Opening new toys? Mine do too! So why not do the same thing with organizing and cleaning?

The course idea came from our in-home clients asking how they can teach their kids to keep their spaces organized and tidy. So we started making videos for the parents and the kids to help. We discovered that the kids kept up with it because they were watching the videos!

And then I noticed my kids… My kids were watching YouTube videos of other kids playing, unboxing toys, and doing other fun things. Then, I’d see my kids acting it out–copying what the kids on YouTube were doing! When I talked to other mom friends, I found out that their kids do that too. So thought it would be a great way to teach kids how to clean and organize!

I get it! Sometimes, coming from an adult, it’s just not the same as coming from another kid. Once we created the videos with the kids, and we had parents and families enrolling at the beginning of the year, parents started telling me about kids their kids learning to organize and actually doing it in their homes.
