Doing a detox to eliminate toxins from inside our bodies is important to do, but equally important is a detox in your home. It is said that the average household can contain more than 500 toxic chemicals inside, many of which cannot even be seen or smelt!

Fortunately there are a few simple steps to take to help protect you and your family.  At first it may seem like an daunting task to detox your home, but start with these 5 small steps and you’ll be on your way to a healthier home and a healthier you!

5 Easy Ways To Detox Your Home

  1. House Plants

Plants can be the best natural air detoxifier.  Certain houseplants such as ivy, sword fern, and spider plants can filter pollutants from the air.  Keep a houseplant in every room – not only are they beautiful to look at, but they will also help purify your house.

  1. Ditch the Artificial Smells

Make a commitment TODAY… to stop using air fresheners, burning candles and using or spraying any other artificial fragrances.  They can contain phthalates, formaldehyde, benzene, tolune… basically a load of nasty chemicals you do not want to be breathing, especially your children!  We all want our homes to smell good, so instead switch to burning pure beeswax candles or using essential oils in a diffuser. You can still have that yummy smell without all the chemical toxicity.

  1. DIY Cleaning Products

Although it may seem a little overwhelming to switch to natural or DIY cleaning products, it’s actually so easy! Use everyday non-toxic ingredients you already have in your home: baking soda, distilled vinegar, castile soap, hydrogen peroxide and lemon peel. A lot of essential oils also have disinfecting properties. My personal favorite oil blends for cleaning are Thieves from Young Living and On Guard from doTERRA.  Once you make that commitment to ditch the cleaning chemicals, your home will be healthier and cleaner!

Jessica loves using cleaning products from Grove Collaborative. And right now you can make the switch even easier by getting a FREE Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Back to School set!! Hand soap, dish soap, multi-purpose spray, hand sanitizer, and scrubbing sponges. All eco-friendly products, which is perfect for a detox of the home.

  1. Leave Shoes at the Door

If you want to help detox your home, you should enforce a ‘no shoe’ policy inside your house. Not only can dirt and grime be brought in on the bottom of our shoes… but so can harmful pesticides, road sealant, lead, fertilizer, etc. You definitely don’t want your baby crawling around on a floor where you just walked with your outdoor shoes on.

  1. Fresh Air

Indoor air can be five times more polluted than outdoor air.  So open up those windows and doors and let some fresh air in! Having fresh air circulating helps clear out the dust, mold spores, synthetic chemicals, and pollutants. The indoor air we breathe is a product of our environment… so always allow in as much fresh outdoor air as possible.
