I have been helping a lot of clients get their closets organized recently, and I just love it! I think it is so fun setting up functional (and pretty) spaces that they can use. As I have been setting up closets, I realized that there are some easy ways to DIY closet organizers without spending a ton of money… or having to use tools!!

The biggest challenge is deciding what clothes to keep and what to donate/sell. Once you have pared down your wardrobe, these helpful tips will definitely come in handy!!

Not sure how to pare things down, read about it here!!!

Use Dresser To Add More Space To Your Closet

The first thing I like to do with any closet project is figure out what types of clothes will be hanging, and which type of things will be folded in dresser drawers.

It really depends on the the space and size of your closet. If you have a single rod, I would utilize dresser space by file-folding your clothes. You can see how I fold over on The Organized Mama TV!

If you have a larger closet, I recommend hanging more clothing items. So I would keep the drawers for under garments and workout attire!

Make Drawers In Your DIY Closet Organizer

If you don’t have space for an oversized dresser with a small closet, I recommend creating drawers within the closet. I like to use bins and file-fold clothes within the bins to create a drawer. It keeps clothes contained, and doesn’t take up as much hanging space!

Again, I file-fold clothes in the bins to utilize as much space as I possibly can!

Don’t have shelves, no problem! Just add a hanging closet organizer and put in bins to hold the clothes.

Hanging As Much As You Can

When it comes to hanging, section off your rod or rods. Some closets are divided nicely, while others are just a single rod. For some clients, I have used labels to create a divide, making it easy to find clothing types.

Only keep what you wear in your closet. I know I already said that!! But it is so important to keep your closet clutter-free.

Jackets and coats should be stored in your front-hall closet, mud room, or basement. Keep the precious closet space clear for clothes.

Shoe Storage For DIY Closet Organizing

While I don’t always recommend keeping all shoes in the closet, I do recommend keeping dress shoes in the closet.

Not only are the beautiful to display, they also aren’t worn daily. By keeping them protected in a shoe box or container helps keep the dust off.

Use the floor or top shelf to store shoes. It is an easy place to store, just add a picture or label on the box so you know what is in each one!

Without using any tools, you just created major space in your closet with these DIY closet organizer ideas!

Use the dresser and file-fold clothes. Use shelves in the closet to act as a drawer/dresser. Hang important clothes in your closet, and keep jackets in the coat closet.

And keep dress shoes in your closet, while every day shoes should stay in the mud room or front hall closet.
