Kids Closet Makeover: Organize and Decorate

Learn tips for how to transform a kids closet in a small bedroom into useful space by decluttering, reinventing the space, organizing, and decorating to make it feel cozy!

My daughter’s bedroom is kind of awkward for useful space. Mostly because she has so many windows, and I hate blocking natural light. Plus her closet bumps out into the room, leaving this small walkway, which is really useless space. So I decided to do a total makeover of her closet. From painting to reinventing the space, this kids closet makeover sure gained her extra space in her room!

Declutter

In order to transform this kids closet, we needed to completely declutter the entire space. I always recommend taking everything out of the space. For this project, I just threw everything on the bed that was on top of the dresser and in the closet.

I wanted a clean slate before I started to rethink the entire space. It’s nice to have a blank canvas to help you conceptualize what you want to do. For this project, I wanted to use wall space for decorations and the shelving on top for storage of clothing that was too big.

Reinvent

In order to reinvent this kids closet, we removed the closet doors, put the dresser in the closet, and painted the entire closet. Since we removed the closet doors, there is a small patch that isn’t carpeted. We just covered that with a rug.

The dresser is a family piece that we painted and changed the hardware. I find it really easy to update old furniture by adding some paint and/or swapping out the hardware. It just gives something old new life!

For the inside of the closet, we used Sherwin Williams High Reflective White paint to cover the cedar lining. The lining was put in prior to us moving in. We thought it would be fun to paint it white to give it a farmhouse-y feel!

Organize

To set up the space in an organized fashion, I recommend creating zones. For this project, the top shelf is for clothing that is too big and bedding. The drawers are for clothing that fits now. On the left side of the dresser is a bag for clothing that is too small. To the right of the dresser are extra blankets and a sleeping bag.

Try to keep things together when organizing kids closet spaces. For more ways to organize kids clothes, check out these posts:

Decorate

Now comes the fun part… decorating the space!!

I started by creating this unicorn sign and adding some glittery paper to the background to add some sparkle. You can download the unicorn print for free!!

Then I created giant paper flowers to add around the unicorn print. I stuck them to the wall using Command Brand velcro hanging strips. I used two large ones on the back of each flower.

Finally, we added some of my daughter’s favorite things to the top of the dresser, including some flowers we found at our local grocery store! I think it’s nice to have living plants in every room of the house. It just makes the space feel more homey!

I am just so happy with how this makeover of the kids closet turned out. Not only did we figure out a way to functionally create more space within my daughter’s room, but we made the space feel like home by adding some paint and pictures! Now we have room for a small desk, a ladder bookshelf, nightstand, and bed.

As she grows, we can easily add a bar for hanging clothes. But for now, this is the perfect space for her and all her stuff!

  1. Whenever I organize my kid’s room, I get too tired that I never thought of decorating it. These tips are so helpful. I should make it a stepwise task.
