10 Pro Tips For Creating Makeup Storage

1. Declutter
Before you can even think about makeup storage, you have to declutter your makeup! Start by laying everything out and throwing away the items that are old. This will help you create a makeup storage system that will work for all your stuff you use, rather than the stuff you have.
2. Group Together
Once you have decluttered your makeup, group like items together. Think all foundations together, all lipsticks. This will help you find the best products for your makeup storage.
3. Use Drawer Organizers
Drawer organizers are probably my favorite way to create makeup storage for my clients. There are many organizers out there, but I am loving the new Onyx collection from iDesign exclusively at Ulta Beauty. I recommend getting one organizer for each type of product you have. This helps eliminate clutter or overflow of makeup.
Measure the drawer, group the products, and store in your drawer for easy makeup storage.
4. Brushes
I have been told by professional makeup artists never to leave your makeup brushes on the counters! Instead store in a drawer or cabinet. I love the countertop organizers, but store it in cabinets! This way I never have to worry about bacteria that floats around in the bathroom getting on my brushes. Eww!
5. Keep What You Use
In order to keep up with your makeup storage, you should only keep the makeup that you actually use. If you don’t use it weekly or for dressing up, then why are you holding onto it??
6. Store Samples Together
Another makeup storage tip is to store all your samples together, near your other makeup. This helps you pull the samples you want to use quickly to use/try. I like keeping them in an acrylic drawer organizer. You can break the organizer into categories so you know what is in each drawer.
7. Make Mornings Easy
To make your mornings easier, set up your makeup storage in the order you use the products and store them in a countertop organizer or drawer system. Start with primers closest to you, then work your way to mascara (or whatever you put on last). If you have a shallow, long drawer, I recommend setting up your makeup storage from either right to left -or- left to right, depending on which is your dominant hand. Yes, this is an actual thing and it really does help you get ready quicker if you set things up for your dominant hand!
8. Expiration Dates
Did you know that makeup has expiration dates?? Make sure you aren’t using expired products on your skin!
Expires after 3 months:
- Eyeliner
- Liquid Eyeliner
Expires after 1 year:
- Concealer
- Cream Blush
- Eye Shadow
- Foundation
- Lip Gloss
- Nail Polish
Expires after 2 years:
- Eyeliner Pencil
- Lip Balms
- Lipstick
- Powder Blush
9. Cleaning
Another tip for makeup storage is to keep your brush cleaning products near your makeup. I like to store the brush cleaners near the brushes because it makes cleaning them easier. I never have to look for the cleaner!
10. Best Makeup Storage Products
When it comes to storage, not all are designed with you in mind!! I prefer the acrylic drawer organizers for all makeup products. I like brushes in a holder or in a drawer organizer. And I like samples in an organizer as well!
