Not every laundry room is created the same. Some laundry rooms I have organized are large, with ample space to store everything from cleaning supplies to laundry items. While other laundry rooms have unique features that can make keeping the space organized challenging.

I have learned a ton of effective ways to organize laundry rooms that have a plethora of features, from quirky built-ins to small spaces to Pinterest-worthy rooms. And the secret to organizing any laundry room is to group things together! By grouping, you can easily keep an organized laundry room. Below I am sharing tips on how to group laundry items that can last multiple uses.

How To Organize Laundry Room with Unique Features

Group Together

To organize laundry room effectively, you need to start by grouping all your like items together. So put all cleaning supplies together. Group all stain removers together. All detergents and fabric softeners should go together. This will help you visually see what you have.

This is a great time to remove any items that don’t totally fit into the laundry room space. Things like toys, food, etc. Unless you are also using that space for overflow storage. Then they should be grouped together and stored together for easy access.

Create Zones

Once you have all the items you want to keep in your laundry room grouped together, it is time to think about creating zones. In unique laundry rooms, you need to plan for the items you must have, want to have, and can have.

The must have items are things you need in order to do laundry. These include laundry detergent, stain removers, etc. Then there are items you want to have in the laundry room. Those can be cleaning supplies, overflow items, shoe care, sewing, etc. Finally there are items you can have in the laundry room. These are the items that can go somewhere else as well.

Start by using Post-It notes to create zones. Keep detergents near the washing machine. That is a zone… detergent zone. Stain removers can go near detergents or in a different area depending on space. That is a zone. Each category is its own individual zone.

Contain Items

When all areas are zoned, think about keeping items contained. I love using the water hyacinth storage baskets to keep things contained and organized in the laundry room. Plus the material is a renewable resource, which is something I love to recommend to clients.

First thing I do when figuring out bins for storage is measure the space. Then I look at the categories to see how much of each item there is. This helps determine the size of the bin we would need. I recommend finding bins that fit both your space and your stuff. With unique spaces, you need to look at both.

For this client, we needed small, medium and large baskets to store their supplies. The top shelf would only fit the small water hyacinth baskets. The middle two shelves could fit the medium storage baskets. Then we used the large baskets for paper towel storage and dryer item storage.

We also used a giant turntable to store all the detergents, fabric softeners, and other laundry items. Using a Lazy Susan can help items not get lost in the back, especially if you have deep or tall cabinets. Adjust the shelves so the turntable will fit. And, for those who aren’t big Lazy Susan fans, I just have to say that you are not really losing space because of the corners that things aren’t being stored in. You are actually gaining more usable space because nothing is lost in the back of the cabinet. This will save you money and time! Plus, this turntable could easily fit under a sink or above the washing machine to create more space.

Hanging

Another way to utilize unique space for an organize laundry room is create hanging space. Use space over the door to hang an ironing board or create storage for bottles of laundry items.

Use space above the washer or dryer for hang-drying clothes. Add a bar or use a pull-down drying rack. Use the extra space in corners to hang items using a hanging lingerie drying rack.

There are many items that can help add more space to unique laundry rooms. Sometimes it takes thinking outside the box to find those options!

Label

Finally, once everything is grouped, zoned, and contained, you need to add labels. This is the key to creating an organize laundry room that will last multiple uses and can work in any unique space. For baskets, I love the bin clips. They are large, fit on most bins, and look pretty!

When labeling, I find it best to label the baskets based on the category that is in the basket. Instead of writing all the items that are in that one basket, keep it simple with 1-2 words. Things like stain remover, sewing, iron. By keeping things simple, you are able to find where things go quickly. Plus you aren’t limited in what can go in that one bin. For example, if you went on a Costco run and come back with some free items that you could use your organized laundry room, you could find the category they belong in and store them together. Let’s say it is fabric softener. You can add that sample to the fabric softener basket and not worry about having to write the new item you added to the basket. This is why I love keeping labels simple.

To organize laundry room with unique features, you need to start by grouping everything together. Then creating zones. Make sure you fit items that have to go in the space first so you have ample space for them. Keep those items contained in baskets or Lazy Susan’s. Use wall space or back of door space for extra storage. And don’t forget to label everything!
