6 Tips For Organizing A Modern Jewelry Box

Organizing expert, The Organized Mama, shares her tips for organizing a modern jewelry box with tips for storage, display and more!

Sometimes I feel like organizing a jewelry box gets left by the wayside when it comes to organizing. Clothing and shoes are exciting to organize, but jewelry isn’t always a fun project. There can be piles of tangled necklaces and bracelets. Missing earrings. Too many items to sort through. #thestruggleisreal

Instead of just letting your jewelry collect dust, I have some tips for how to organize a modern jewelry box!

Group Together

There are so many ways I have created jewelry stations for clients. But the key to organizing your modern jewelry box is to group like items together. Now, that could be all day jewelry together, and all night jewelry together. Or group by color. I have even grouped jewelry based on how the client wears it. For example, she liked certain earrings with particular necklaces and bracelets. So we grouped those items all together using Stackers ring and bracelet boxes.

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to group like items together when it comes to your jewelry. Just find a way to group them so you can easily find what you need and can visualize what you have when you are shopping. This helps limit duplicates of items you may already have.

Keep What You Love

As you are grouping like items together, only keep items that you love! If your modern jewelry box is filled with items you never wear, how are you ever going to find the things you actually do wear?? Make sure you keep the items you love and actually wear, and get rid of the rest.

If something is sentimental but you never wear it, I suggest storing it in your memory box or find a way to display the item. After our wedding, I had a brouche that was attached to my bouquet. Instead of storing it in my jewelry box, never to be used, I created a photo box and added the brouche to the box. Now it is on display on the stairs heading down to our basement. I see it every day and it is a beautiful reminder of our special day.

Fix The Broken Stuff

As you are going through the items you love, if you notice something is broken or discolored, set a goal to get it fixed and cleaned. If you don’t get it fixed by the deadline, then donate the item. My reasoning behind this is because if you don’t make it a priority to fix it, you won’t make it a priority to actually wear it once it is cleaned or fixed. And there is no room in your modern jewelry box for things you won’t actually wear!

Create Easy Systems

Once everything is sorted/grouped/categorized, it is time to set up easy systems for storing your jewelry. When I say system, I mean a routine or flow to how things are to be selected and put away. If you keep a ring holder to collect your rings at the end of the day, do you find yourself storing all your jewelry in that holder because it is easy?? Well, the routine or system you created isn’t working because it isn’t easy to put things away. You want to set up things that are easy for you to maintain, for both selecting and putting away jewelry.

Storage

One way to create an easy system is to store all your jewelry in a thin drawer in your bedroom or closet. Use organizers like the Stackers boxes. This makes it easy to put away your jewelry because you just open the drawer and put in the divided Stacker boxes.

Another way is to store in a jewelry box near your closet or dresser. Keep it simple with how you set up the jewelry box. I have my modern jewelry box sitting on our dresser. In the top of the Stackers boxes, I keep rings and my frequently worn bracelets. I keep earrings in the 41-section Stacker. Watches and other jewelry necessitates are stored in the 3-section Stacker.

Display

Another option for organizing your jewelry box is to display your favorite jewelry. My one caveat to that is that if you don’t wear it frequently, the jewelry gets discolored and dusty rather quickly. When I display jewelry for clients, I make sure to keep them visible without leaving them out.

Start by storing like jewelry together. Only keep what you love and fix or polish anything that needs some love. Create easy systems (or routines) for putting items away. Store and display your jewelry to make putting away a breeze!
