I am excited to have Daisy from Crappy 2 Happy with us sharing the best homemade mattress cleaning solution recipe with us! Her experience with young kiddos totally comes into play with her recipe and tips for cleaning mattresses!

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m awful when it comes to spring cleaning.  I had to actually “google” what spring cleaning is, but once I started watching YouTube videos with time lapses and upbeat music, I was hooked.  The first space I tackled was the master bedroom, and I found this to be best tip of my cleaning adventures, so read on if you want to know how to clean your mattress too!

Now I wanted to include my kids, because even though it takes longer, it really does make for a “fun” experience (plus they already had their fill of screen time for the day…), so I told them we were going to do a science project!  Our mission was to see if we could get the pee stains, marker stains, and scuff marks off of our bed mattress with a homemade solution based on an internet search.  Here’s what we did.

The Best Homemade Mattress Cleaning Solution Recipe

Materials

  • 8 oz hydrogen peroxide
  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 drops of a dishwashing soap*
  • 3 drops of an essential oils**
  • 1 spray bottle (PRO tip: grab a spray bottle with a larger straw so the mixed formula can get to the spray nozzle easily).
  • Large measuring cup or bowl
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Vacuum

Optional – Funnel for easier pouring and gloves to protect your hands from turning ghostly white (from the baking soda)

* I used Dawn because it really does get out ALL poop stains from baby blowouts, I’ve had four kids and seven years of experience with this.

**I used lavender because it’s supposed to help you sleep better, but upon thinking of a do-over, I’d pick lemon because with our mattress protector and sheets, you won’t be able to smell that much of it anyway, and I like lemon more.  This is really so you have a good experience whilst cleaning the mattress, not so much for sleeping on it anyway…

Tutorial:

Step One

Begin making your homemade solution by pouring 8 oz of hydrogen peroxide into a cup or bowl.  Add the 3 tablespoons of baking soda.  Mix it a bit with the spray bottle’s straw.  Next, add in 2 drops of dishwashing liquid, continue to mix the solution.  Last, mix in 3 drops of an essential oil to create an aroma of fun cleaning power.  Give your solution a light whirl, and then carefully pour it into your spray bottle (with a funnel if available).

Step Two

Begin cleaning the mattress’s stains by spraying the solution onto the stain and applying some elbow grease with your microfiber cloth.

At first, attempt to clean with the mixture applied in steady and slow circular motions.  Then, if said steady movement does not work, begin attacking it a bit faster and with more speed and determination.  This seems to have worked the best for my kids and me, as it became a competition of who could get their stains out first.  Repeat as deemed necessary.

For our pee and blood stain conundrum, we ended up pouring a bit of the solution onto the microfiber cloth, and then rubbing it over the stain repeatedly until the stain started to disappear.  For lighter stains, a few sprays and some light circular pressure with the microfiber cloth seemed to work.

Step Three

Allow solution applied on the stain to dry.

Step Four

It’s now time to use your vacuum (a smaller attachment, like one used to vacuum sofas may work best) to remove any remaining debris or white powder.  Once the stains have been given ample opportunity to dry, run the vacuum over it.

Step Five

Step back to enjoy your removed mattress stain.
