As many of you know, in my former life, I was an elementary special education teacher.  I also taught general education (grades 2-5).  Then I became the district’s director of special education.  The reason why I’m telling you all of this is because there are two very important national school weeks coming up…Administrative Professionals Day, which is Wednesday, April 22, 2015 and Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 4 through May 8, 2015.

When I was teaching in a large school, we had three secretaries who were the biggest help and support for me as a teacher.  I would make our schools’ administrative professionals plants, cookies, brownies or banana bread to say thank you.  I also had the students create cards.

Gift Ideas for Teachers And Administrators

Back when I was the director of special education, I had an administrative professional keep me organized and on track.  When I was working, I wanted to get her something really thoughtful, so I thought about all of the things she really enjoyed.  My administrative professional loved “going for a drive” and playing the quarter slots at our local casino!  I thought it would be fun if I gave her a few rolls of quarters to go play.  I also made her a card to share how grateful I was to have her help me throughout the school year.  She loved the gift and said it was very thoughtful.  So my advice is to think of something that your administrative professional would enjoy and give them that special gift.

Another fun gift idea would be to make a cookie recipe in a mason jar.  I gave our schools’ administrative professionals this recipe for a Christmas gift and they all told me they loved the thought and unique gift idea!  One of the admin professionals said she made them for a cookie exchange, saving her the trouble of having to buy all of the ingredients!

Over the years I received such generous gifts from students during teacher appreciation week.  Show your children’s teachers some love throughout the week!  Now I know we see so many wonderful Pinterest-worthy projects to give teachers, but my favorite were the truly thoughtful ones based on what the students observed.  My students knew I loved Starbucks coffee, so one year, a student drew a card for me holding my iced Chai latte and reading a book.  Inside the card was a gift card to Starbucks.  I still have the card because the gift was truly thoughtful and represented me to that student.

I also received a giant coffee cup with some of my favorite tea inside from a student.  The student remembered that when I was sick, I enjoyed drinking this tea to help me feel better!

On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, remember to say thank you to your administrative professionals because they really do a lot to keep things running smoothly!  And throughout the week of May 4-8, 2015, make sure your child’s teacher feels the appreciation you have for all they do!  Gift cards are always amazing gifts, along with books for the class library!

What are you planning on doing for Teacher Appreciation Week?  Teacher friends, what has been your favorite gifts?  I’d love to hear what you all think!
