Whenever I get annoyed with an area of my home, I start to look at what specifically is bothering me about that area. And guess what I typically find?? There is no order in that area of my home. Nothing has a place. There is no organization. So I have to create a way to make the space organized. This happens for a lot of in-home clients as well. They find that there are areas of their home that need a way to reorganize their home. So I am breaking down my steps I use to create organization in a space in your home that needs order. These are my tricks to reorganize your home.

Identify The Area That Needs A Reorganization

Now we all have those areas. The ones that need to change. Because they aren’t working for us. They are the spaces that drive you nuts because they never stay organized. So they need to be reorganized. These are the areas that we need to identify. Find the areas that are bothering you. And make them the priority to reorganize the space. Get really specific. Don’t say my entire kitchen. Find drawers or cabinets that aren’t working. This will help you actually reorganize your home in a way that works for you.

Once you identify those areas, you can pick one to start. Don’t try to do all the areas. Start with one area to reorganize.

In the video above, I am reorganizing an area of our kitchen that wasn’t working for me. It was 3 drawers near our dining room table. The area just become a dumping ground for things we didn’t know where to put them. So I wanted to reorganize the space to better serve our family.

Decide What Is Not Working

Once you have decided what needs to be reorganized, you need to figure out what isn’t working. When looking at what isn’t working, you have to look at the entire space and find the parts you don’t like. Maybe you don’t like that everything gets dumped in that one area. Maybe you don’t like how difficult it is to get something from that space. Maybe you need to move that entire drawer somewhere else. As yourself why you picked this area to reorganize. This will help guide you to find what isn’t working in that space.

My kitchen drawers were getting to be a dumping ground for random things. That wasn’t working for me any more. So I needed to be really specific about what was actually to be stored in that area. I knew what wasn’t working and that was letting the drawers become a dumping ground. So I had to give each drawer a purpose.

Remove Everything

Once you find what isn’t working, remove everything from the area your want to reorganize. When I remove things, I like to also group them by category or type of item to make the process move faster. So group one type of item together. When I was reorganizing our drawers, I put all the lunch items together. All the table setting pieces together. And all the other things together because I knew they didn’t belong in the drawers. I already had an idea of what I wanted the purpose of the space to be, which helped.

Give Space A Purpose

This step you can do either before your remove things or after. It is a personal preference.

To give the space a purpose, you have to figure out what you want the space to do. What is the reason for storing these items here? Why do you want these items in this location? By answering these questions, you can decide if storing things in a specific place makes sense.

For me, I wanted my kitchen drawers to hold our lunch supplies and table settings. So the purpose of the drawers were for those items only. Everything else didn’t belong.

My #1 Secret To Reorganizing Your Home

Since you gave everything a purpose, you can now do my favorite secret when reorganizing. And that is only put back the items that belong in the space. You gave every drawer a purpose, so now you can put the items that go on each drawer back. As you do this, you will find that there are things that no longer belong in the drawer or cabinet or closet. Those are the items that are clutter. And those are the things you can remove.

Because you are being intentional about what and how you are using your space, you are going to be able to keep the space organized easier!

Remove Clutter

This is the easy part of the entire process when reorganizing your home. Because all the items that are not put away will be known as clutter! Now clutter doesn’t always mean things that are trash. Clutter can mean things that don’t belong in that spot. When you are removing the clutter from one area, make sure to pull out items you know belong in other locations.

When I was reorganizing out our kitchen drawers, I found cookbooks that belonged in our cabinets with the other cookbooks. I found serving platters that needed to be stored with other serve ware. Now these things aren’t considered clutter. They are just clutter in that one area. And because of those items, my drawers ended up needing to be reorganized. So removing that clutter from that space and storing the items where they should go helps you stay more organized.

This Step Is A Most When Reorganizing Your Home

You did all the work. Now you have to do this step in order to keep things organized. And that is label! Whenever I reorganize any area of my home, I use sticky notes to label the drawers, cabinets, and shelves. Because if something isn’t working, I can move the sticky note around instead of worrying about taking out my label maker or creating new labels. I like keeping the sticky notes up for about a week before I do fancy labels. I did have a client who just kept the sticky notes on all her kitchen cabinets after we reorganized her kitchen. She said her family loved them because it made it easy to find everything since the sticky notes were on the outside of the cabinets.
