Here’s a crazy thought, what if each individual in a bed has their own blanket that was just for them. No sharing with their partner.

No tugging or tossing during the night.

Just peacefully cozying up with your own blanket to sleep through the night.

That’s the CliffsNotes version of the Scandinavian Sleep Method.

And my husband and I tried it after one of my friends said it’s how she sleeps through the night.

So how did this little experiment go? I’m so glad you asked!

What Is The Scandinavian Sleep Method?

The Scandinavian Sleep Method is rooted in the concept of hygge, a Danish term that encompasses coziness, comfort, and contentment.

This method emphasizes creating a sleep environment that is both minimalistic and inviting, allowing for a more restful sleep experience.

One of the key principles is the use of natural materials, such as linen or cotton bedding, which are breathable and help regulate body temperature throughout the night.

Another important aspect is the use of layering blankets.

Instead of using a single heavy comforter, like most Midwesterners are accustom to using, this method says layers!

The reason being is that you can adjust the layers according to your preference and temperature needs.

This not only provides better insulation but also allows for greater flexibility between the people in bed. Let’s say one person sleeps hot, so they can have one layer on blankets in bed. While the other can have multiple blankets.

Layering blankets can also contribute to a sense of security and coziness, which gives you a more restful nights’ sleep.

The Scandinavian Sleep Method encourages a clutter-free bedroom with minimal distractions. This includes reducing noise and light, as well as incorporating calming elements such as soft lighting and soothing scents.

Basically, you want your bedroom to feel as cozy as possible!

How Can I Test This Method At Home?

If you are as intrigued as I was, here’s how you can test this method at home before you invest in new bedding.

Start by decluttering your space. Remove anything that doesn’t belong in the bedroom. You need your space to feel clutter-free.

To do this quickly, grab a basket and toss all the things you don’t want to keep in your room. Everything from papers to books to work documents to knick-knacks.

Then only use your lamps, not overhead lights, to illuminate your room. This creates the ambiance of candles and low lights the Scandinavian sleep method is known for.

Remove your one quilt or comforter. The person who sleeps hotter can use layers of blankets. The other person can fold the quilt or comforter in half. Use the folded quilt like a sleeping bag or as double layers.

Test this out for a night or two. Take note of how you are sleeping, how frequently you are waking during the night, and how rested you are in the mornings.

If you notice the benefits, invest in bedding. If not, go back to the way you used to sleep.

This is how we started, as my husband wasn’t totally convinced of this method.

Preparing For The Scandinavian Sleep Method

After I heard about this sleep method , I knew I had to test it out!

Our bedroom was already decluttered because I hate sleeping with stuff on the ground or on my night stand. So we already had that going for us.

Our shades in our bedroom already were room darkening, so we were set there as well.

And the brightness of our lightbulbs in our lamps can be adjusted, so we lowered them to a yellow-ish tone.

I ended up getting two twin duvets and covers. We already had sherpa blankets in our living room that we brought up to our bedroom to use.

After washing everything, I put the covers on the duvets. These covers have ties in the corners and on the sides so that to duvets don’t move around inside the covers, which is really helpful.

Then I changed the sheets so they were fresh and clean. And adding the new duvets to the bed.

I was really looking forward to this sleep method as I was the one who would end up waking up from the comforter moving and getting startled or getting overly heated because my husband would throw his covers on me.

My husband, on the other hand, wasn’t fully convinced this was a good idea as he was annoyed he had layers of blankets to keep him warm versus a comforter. But that was about to change.

#ad Have you tried the Scandinavian Sleep Method? It’s where each individual in a bed get their own blankets. This limits nighttime disturbances of tugging or pulling of covers and better temperature regulation. Why Organizing Your Bedroom Is The Best Place To Start

Our Experience With This Sleep Method

Night 1: Our first night testing out this sleep method with an actual duvet was wonderful for me. I loved jumping into bed and wrapping myself in the duvet. I got a great nights’ sleep and didn’t wake up because of pulling of the comforter. My husband didn’t complain about it when he woke up. I can see him enjoying this as well.

Night 2: I woke up in the middle of the night because I got stuck in the duvet. I ended up twisting myself in the covers and startled myself because of it. My husband had a great nights’ sleep. So I am calling this a win for him.

Night 3: I didn’t wrap myself in the duvet tonight. It was a much better decision as I didn’t get all twisted again. I think I found a way to get cozy without wrapping blankets around me. And my husband no longer wants to share a blanket with me.

Night 4: Tonight I added additional blankets because it is starting to feel like winter. My husband did not add extra blankets, which is typical. Because of that, neither one of us was too hot or too cold while we were sleeping.

Night 5: Best night sleep for both of us. I feel like we are finding our groove with these new sleeping arrangements.

Night 6: No issues, just two people sleeping the best because they are able to layer based on their coldness levels. Also I have gotten much quicker at making the bed with two twin duvets and blankets.

Night 7: By night 7, all the principals for the Scandinavian sleep method are engrained in our bedtime routines. Our lights are at a cozy brightness. We keep the bedroom clutter-free. And we each have our own blankets to layers to keep us warm during winter and cool during summer.

Challenges We Had

The first challenge I faced was convincing my husband to try this sleep method. He was not interested in changing up our sleeping arrangements.

But he was also not the one waking up in the middle of the night because the comforter moved.

While this wasn’t a big challenge, it was still something I needed him to see the benefits of, which is why we tested it out without investing in new bedding.

Another challenge was figuring out how many layers I needed to sleep comfortably. As the weather gets cooler, I know I need more layers. So finding that balance is key.

My priority is not waking up because I got too hot. Instead I want to find a balance of cool and warmth during my sleep. Once I found that, I slept great!

Challenges You May Have

A big piece of the Scandinavian sleep method is keeping your bedroom clutter-free. This can be a big challenge to some as your bedroom can also act as an office, workout space, or multi-purpose room.

So keeping the space organized can be a bit of a challenge. To combat this, add a little extra time before bed to tidy up. Maybe just straighten up piles of paper on the desk or close your computer so it feels like the space is tidy.

Another challenge could be sleeping with many layers. If you aren’t used to sleeping with layers, this can feel very different. It can feel cumbersome and unfamiliar, especially for those of us who were used to a single, heavier comforter.

Limiting outside light or noise can be challenging, along with creating that ambiance inside the bedroom. Not all rooms have room darkening shades. And not all rooms can be quiet.

So trying to find ways to limit those within your bedroom will be helpful, but can be tricky.

Benefits We Found

From the very first few nights of trying the Scandinavian Sleep Method, we noticed a dramatic difference in how well we slept.

Falling asleep became easier, and we stayed asleep longer without the usual tossing and turning. And when I did wake up because I’m old now, I was able to fall back to sleep faster than I was before.

The combination of a calm, cozy sleep environment helped signal to our bodies that it was time to unwind.

The result?

Fewer wake-ups and a noticeably deeper, more restorative sleep.

One of the biggest game-changers was the comfort of having individual duvets and natural bedding. Being able to adjust our own layers meant we weren’t waking up too hot or too cold — a small change that made a big impact.

It’s a more personalized sleep than sharing bedding with my husband. Because one of us would usually not sleep well because we were trying to sleep with the same bedding.

The method also improved how we felt during the day, too.

With better-quality sleep came higher energy, sharper focus, and a more positive mindset.

That sense of calm carried over into our mornings, setting the tone for a more productive and balanced day.

Adopting the Scandinavian Sleep Method transformed not just our nights, but our overall well-being. I am a big fan.

My Favorite Products For The Scandinavian Sleep Method

Since the idea is using more breathable materials like cotton, I wanted to make sure all our bedding was more natural.

We started off with cotton sheets that are so silky soft. We are not using a top sheet, so we just need the fitted sheet. During the summer my husband will use the top sheet folded in half as his blanket. I still need a quilt.

We are using a down-alternative duvet and cotton duvet covers since our bed is a king, we are doing two twin duvets.

I also have serpa blankets to add to the bed as layers for when it gets really cold here in Minnesota.

For pillow cases, I am using a silk case, while my husband is using a wedge pillow because he snores.

By keeping our bedding more natural, I found my skin has also not been as dry. No idea if they are correlated, but just something I noticed.

Is The Scandinavian Sleep Method Worth It?

For us, I found this method to be completely worth it. As we are getting older, it is really nice to have individualized sleeping items.

This way neither partner is too hot or too cold…or waking up in the middle of the night because someone pulled the comforter off of you.

It created a really cozy vibe in our bedroom that the entire family can feel. So we changed lights in the kids rooms to give them that hygge vibe as well.

In the end, the Scandinavian Sleep Method is such a simple yet effective way to level up your sleep.

By focusing on comfort, calm, and individual preferences, it creates the kind of restful environment that makes it easier to relax and truly recharge.

Whether you’re dealing with restless nights or just want to make your bedtime routine feel a little more peaceful, this approach is worth trying.

Give it a go — you might be surprised at how something as small as separate duvets can completely transform your nights (and your mornings).
