If you’ve ever stuffed coupons into a drawer and promised you’d use them “next time,” you’re not alone.
We had a whole coupon drawer near the garage so we could grab coupons before heading out — and it started out nice and tidy.
But within a few months, it turned into a total disaster zone.
Coupons were piling up, getting lost, and expiring before we even had the chance to use them.
That’s when I realized we didn’t just need a coupon drawer — we needed a coupon organization system that actually worked.
Here’s exactly how I organized our coupons so we could find what we needed, when we needed it.
Step 1: Empty Everything and Sort Your Coupons
Start by pulling out all your coupons — every single one.
Lay them out on a flat surface and start sorting by store or category (grocery, craft stores, restaurants, etc.).
As you sort, check expiration dates. You’ll probably be surprised by how many are no longer valid. Recycle or toss any expired coupons to instantly reduce the clutter.
Sorting by store makes it easy to grab what you need before you leave the house — no digging through random piles.
Step 2: Create a Simple Coupon Organization System
Once you’ve narrowed things down to the coupons you’ll actually use, it’s time to create a system for organizing coupons.
I like to use envelopes labeled by store name — one for Target, one for Michael’s, one for grocery stores, and so on.
This way, when you’re heading out, you can simply grab the envelope you need.
Pro tip: Keep a pen or small notepad inside each envelope to jot down reminders like “use before Sunday” or “stack with store coupon.”
If you prefer something sturdier, a travel envelope set, accordion file, or budget binder works great too.
Step 3: Store Coupons Where You’ll Remember Them
Now that you’ve got your coupon envelopes ready, the key is to store them where you’ll actually see them.
I keep our coupon drawer organized alphabetically so it’s quick to flip through.
If you’re more of an on-the-go shopper, keep your envelopes or binder in the car glove box — that way, you’ll never forget your coupons at home.
You can also use a small zip pouch or coupon wallet to carry gift cards and loyalty cards in the same place for easy access.

Step 4: Maintain Your Coupon System
Once a month, do a quick check of your envelopes. Toss expired coupons, add new ones, and reorder the envelopes if needed.
