Unlock the door to your child’s success with a set of keys you might not have realized you already possess – executive functioning skills with executive function examples. Yes, you read that correctly!
In a world where children are navigating an ever-evolving landscape, these skills play a pivotal role in shaping their future triumphs.
From mastering organization to cultivating social understanding, each executive skill is a building block for success.
The journey starts at home, where parents become the architects of their children’s cognitive development.
Learn what are executive skills, practical ways to instill them in your child’s daily routine, and empower your child for a future filled with confidence, resilience, and achievement.
What Are Executive Functioning Skills?
Executive skills are a set of skills kids (and adults) need.
Basically, they’re life skills. Executive functioning skills encompass a wide variety of important skills that your kids will use for life and for right now.
Kids have had to shift their learning styles. Parents have had to take on extra responsibilities. It feels like we have less time to do more stuff.
Well, teaching your kids these executive functioning skills will help you get some of those responsibilities off of your plate and provide your kids with some much-needed breaks throughout their school day.
Yes, some of these things will require more work on the front end. You have to teach your kids how to do each task and set the expectation. But once they learn, it will help.
These skills include:
- Organization
- Time Management
- Planning
- Cognitive Flexibility
- Working Memory
- Impulse Control
- Social Understanding
Each one of these skills is crucial for their success later in life. Which means, we need to start teaching them the skills now.
So where do we start?
We start by setting up our homes so they can begin to learn how to navigate these skills.
In their bedrooms, they may need checklists for remembering all the steps to take to get ready for bed.
When they come home from school, they may need a flow chart reminding them of steps they can take throughout the afternoon based on activities or homework.
What Are Some Executive Function Examples?
Sometimes these skills…which you may not have learned…are hard to teach our kids.
We could be learning how to manage our time. Our working memory may not be as great as it used to be. Maybe our organizational skills need some tweaking.
Which is why it may be useful to use tools that are already out there.
