Home decorating is an art not to be taken lightly. It takes work to make a room look seamless, like all elements are working together and not creating more clutter. Less is often more, meaning you won’t have to employ too many decorations to achieve a beautiful result. Follow these tips to help you build a better home interior.

1. Find Your Style

Do a little digging and you’ll find plenty of interior design styles that could suit you and your home. They can help guide your future purchases and keep your whole house on the aesthetic you prefer. There may be several that appeal to you, and with a little practice, you’ll learn to blend multiple styles seamlessly.

Minimalism is a popular interior design style that emphasizes functional, open spaces rather than those cluttered with unnecessary things. If this seems like a trend you’d like to follow, do some research and create mood boards of your favorite spaces. It may be difficult to go from a cluttered house to a minimalistic one, but in the end, it’s worth it. You have much less to clean in a minimalist home.

2. Go With Neutral Colors

Neutral furnishings are the best idea to pull a room together, especially if the walls are painted in bold colors. Too many shades in one area can make your home look garish and unwelcoming — and it might even give you or your guests headaches depending on how saturated the colors are. Bolder furniture works well with natural tones for a stark contrast. Deep colors, like navy or emerald green, would look good with a more neutral hue on the walls.

You’ll want to plan the rest of your decorations around your furniture. Since furniture is the most expensive component of decorating a room, it makes sense that you should invest in quality pieces that set the basis for the room and are comfortable while also long-lasting. You can alternate decorations according to the season, or your mood. Decorate with as much or as little as you want according to your interior design style.

3. Sell What You Don’t Need To Decorate Your Home

Before choosing decorations, you should go through things you already have to see if they fit with your new style. You can take this opportunity to sort clothes and other assorted items you own that you haven’t touched in a while. Some pieces, like old jewelry, may fetch a great price if it’s still in good condition — meaning you can use it to contribute to your new decoration fund.

Selling these items will also give you much more room to store new decor and things that align more with the design you were thinking of for your home. Just because something doesn’t match your aesthetic, doesn’t mean you need to get rid of it, though. Keep what you like, then sell or give away what you don’t.

4. Opt for Cozy Items

Cozy items can really jazz up an otherwise dull space. If you need a pop of color or an extra zest of something, find it in comfortable things. You can layer throw blankets or pillows on couches and beds to make them look extra welcoming. Plus, they double as useful items your guests will enjoy.

Many people pursue the “hygge” lifestyle, which emphasizes items that make you feel comfortable or cozy. Add some throw blankets and candles in the mix, and you have a healthy dash of hygge that can help your house feel like home in the most stylish way.

5. Be Strategic With Size When Decorating Your Home

Finding items that make sense for the space is key in decorating. Think about the size of what you’re buying and whether it will fit with your existing decor. If you’re aiming for minimalist, clutter-free interiors, search for modern furniture with sleek silhouettes rather than clunky old-fashioned pieces.

If you’re decorating a large wall, you might consider opting for one big art piece. Although gallery walls have been trendy for a while, they often have a cluttered appearance. Placing one spotlight piece on the wall will fill the space without overwhelming the eye. A mirror is another great option, as it will reflect light to brighten the room, and make it feel bigger.

Decorate Your Home With Warmth

Above all, your house should look like you, no matter which interior design style you choose and what you aim to prioritize. You don’t need to have a home straight out of the magazines for it to be delightful. It can look beautiful without clutter and still include the elements you love. If inspiration has struck you, it’s time to get designing.
