Are you struggling with where to start decluttering your home? It can be so overwhelming deciding on where to start. That giant pile of clothing can seem like your own personal Mount Everest. Those papers on your dining room table can seem like your own David and Goliath battle. Because deciding what to keep and what to get rid of is our own personal journey. Only you can decide what is important to you. I can give you strategies for starting and conquering those piles. But it will be up to you to decide what is really important.
Where To Start Decluttering Your Home
Start Where You Are
The best piece of advice is to start where you are when it comes to decluttering your things. Don’t try to get your home looking like Pinterest instantly. Realize that you have to start somewhere and if you want your end goal to be a Pinterest picture, then strive for that! But don’t expect it to magically happen. When you do that, you end up feeling discouraged half way through the project. Or you won’t finish the project because it isn’t turning out how you want it to.
Also remember that what you see on Pinterest is only one view. You aren’t getting the full picture of the space. So make sure you plan for all the space you have by only keeping things you use, love, or enjoy! Stop thinking with the end in mind and start tackling things little by little.
Do A Little Every Day
When you start decluttering your home, doing a little bit every day is much more effective than doing a major declutter in one day. Why? Because you won’t feel the burn-out! You know that feeling when you are in the middle of a giant project and you get so overwhelmed/annoyed/tired that you just stop. By doing a little every day you are not going to hit that decision fatigue that happens when you start doing a giant project. Decision fatigue is when you feel the burn-out of making decisions. This happens often when you are decluttering!
So when asking yourself where to start decluttering your home, start with doing a little every day.
